Musso Pora Riserva Barbaresco DOCG 2015 Red Wine

Piedmont, Italy

98 pts. Ian D'Agata, Terrior Sense:

"Musso is one of the best and most underrated producers not just of Barbaresco but of Italy.”

“Bright medium red. Perfumed spicy red fruit, orange liqueur, sweet spices (mostly cinnamon and vanilla, plus a whisper of nutmeg) and minerals on the mesmerizing nose. Beautifully long and very complex, this boasts deep red cherry and spicy red berry flavours, complicated by a delicate herbaceousness adding further complexity on the long finish. Like a red berry cocktail with alcohol and a little bit of oak, this is just a fantastic wine that is best cellared for another five-six years to have it really showoff all its greatness. Musso first made the Pora Riserva in 1967, then again in 1971, 1974, 1978, and then, after a hiatus, started again in 2013, something all wine lovers should be immensely happy about. Drinking window: 2026-2045."

93 pts. Wine Advocate:

"The Musso 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Pora offers hints of dried cherry and dark fruit with dustings of sweet pipe tobacco. The wine is streamlined and elegant in terms of mouthfeel, although the bouquet is a notch richer and more concentrated in this warm vintage. One noticeable thing about this Riserva Pora is how soft and integrated the tannins are." - ML, July 2020

92 pts. Wine Enthusiast:

"Smooth and enveloping, this offers aromas of tobacco, baked plum and blue flower. The savory, fleshy palate is already accessible, offering mature black cherry, raspberry compote and baking spice alongside polished tannins. Drink through 2027." - KO, 11/2020

When we visited Piedmont, Italy, we fell in love with Barbarescos. Such a flavorful, delightful wine! Discovering Musso and their outstanding Barbarescos was one of the highlights of our trip! Emanuele Musso took time out during his busy harvest day to show us around the winery and introduce us to his wines. We were extremely impressed! You MUST try this one! You'll fall in love with Musso Barbarescos like we did!

The Pora vineyard site is one of the most famous in all of Barbaresco.  The wines produced from Pora grapes tend to be muscular and bold with a rich tapestry of ripe fruits, truffles, spice box, and Marasca cherry.  Musso’s 2.5ha plot extends through the central amphitheater of Pora, enjoying the best exposure and elevation.   The Musso Pora is wonderfully complex and powerful example with intense rich fruit woven over big rich tannin and polished acidity buoys the backdrop of tea leaves, black cherry, and fresh cut herbs.  This is a wine that needs time for its best presentation, showing a ferocious spirit when fresh and young.

FROM THE WINERY

We produce Riserva from the single vineyard 'Pora'. That is the vineyard where there are the oldest vines of our estate. The vineyard is a big and unique lot of 2,5 hectares. The vines on the upper portion are 55 to more than 80 years old.

The yields are naturally very low and the varieties are very old, the bunches are small and compact with particular violet shades on the berries when exposed to the sun.

The wine Riserva is produced following a very traditional process: like the normal Pora, the Riserva is fermented in a stainless steel tank at controlled temperatures. During the fermentation several pumpovers per day are made. After the fermentation the wine is left in contact with the skins for about 45/50 days. Then it is moved into the big wooden barrels: in this case, the Riserva is aged for 3 years.

The 2015 gave us very strong and full bodied wines, they are wines that can be easily aged for more than 10 years. Probably you find more concentration and deepness than in the traditional Pora.
